Mary: Servant of the Lord

Topic: Christmas Passage: Luke 1:26–56
For the second week of Advent, we will look at Mary and how the angel Gabriel appeared to her to inform her that she would conceive and give birth to a Son, even though she was a virgin. When Gabriel told her that the Lord will "give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever" (Luke 1:32-33), Mary would have known these phrases were the fulfillment of the covenant promises of God to his people. After seeing Elizabeth, her relative who was carrying John the Baptist in her womb, Mary burst into a song which consisted of tons of Old Testament allusions and quotations.
